Expanding Irrigation Infrastructure Through PM Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY). Ensuring efficient water management and expanding irrigation infrastructure is critical for enhancing agricultural productivity and ensuring farmers' livelihoods in India. The National Commission for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Development (NCAFD) plays a key role in implementing and managing irrigation initiatives, particularly under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY). This flagship scheme, launched by the Government of India, aims to provide assured irrigation to every farm, ensuring efficient use of water resources under the slogan "Har Khet Ko Pani" (Water for Every Field).

PMKSY focuses on integrated water resource management, emphasizing optimal use of available water, rainwater harvesting, and micro-irrigation techniques such as drip and sprinkler irrigation. By doing so, it promotes "Per Drop More Crop", enhancing water efficiency while improving crop yields. The scheme integrates existing irrigation schemes and promotes convergence between rural development, agriculture, and water resource departments to ensure effective implementation.

The NCAFD ensures proper policy execution, monitoring, and financial support to state governments for constructing irrigation infrastructure, including canals, check dams, farm ponds, and tube wells. The commission also promotes watershed management projects, aiming to recharge groundwater and prevent soil erosion, particularly in drought-prone regions.

Additionally, digital and remote sensing technologies are being employed to monitor irrigation efficiency and ensure equitable water distribution. The government also encourages public-private partnerships (PPPs) and farmer participation to maintain irrigation projects sustainably.

Through PMKSY and related initiatives, NCAFD aims to reduce dependency on monsoons, enhance agricultural resilience, and improve farmers’ incomes, ensuring long-term water security and food security in India. Effective irrigation management is a cornerstone of modern agriculture, making these initiatives essential for the nation’s agricultural sustainability and rural prosperity.
